How do you use a cake decorating stencil on buttercream?

Using a cake stencil involves a few steps and a lot of patience!
These are our directions:

  • Gently hold your chosen stencil onto the cake with the very tips of your fingers. If you are concerned that the stencil may move, you can pin the stencil onto the cake.
  • Add small amounts of buttercream at the tip of a spatula and apply it over the stencil. Just remember, you will only require a thin coating of buttercream for stencilling. If you apply too much, you may smudge the stencilled design.
  • Once you have applied buttercream to the stencil, you can use a cake scraper to scrape off the excess. This will just leave a more even finish. Ensure you do not press or push the cake scraper into the cake as you can smear the stencilled design.
  • Finally, being super careful, slowly and gently pull away the stencil from the top corner which should leave you with a beautiful design.

Can I use royal icing with a cake stencil?

For beginners we recommend stencilling on buttercream, ganache or fondant. However, once you have mastered those, royal icing can also be used. Keep in mind that you have to have the right consistency of royal icing for it to work properly.

How can I keep a stencil from sticking to a cake?

Our top tips to prevent a stencil from sticking to your cake are:

  • Make sure your cake is a little bit firm and is still not warm/hot.
  • Do not apply too much pressure or force when stencilling.
  • Another one of our handy tips is to use a little bit of a non-stick cooking spray on the side of the stencil that will be touching your cake.

How long should I let the cake chill for before stencilling?

To ensure your cake stencil does not stick to your cake, make sure your cake is cold/firm to the touch before starting to stencil onto it. This can sometimes take a few hours, so always allow a good amount of time to finish off your cake.

Can I reuse cake stencils?

Yes! Cake stencils are reusable. To clean the Caking It Up stencils, wash them gently with warm soapy water and then let it dry. Store your stencil laying flat to ensure the stencil design remains perfect and can be reused.
